CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - NV Energy is pulling out of a large wind energy farm proposed along the Nevada-Idaho line because of the federal government's decision to delay the project until an assessment is done on sage grouse.

The Las Vegas Sun (http://bit.ly/I6UJiv ) reports the Nevada utility was working with RES America Development to build the China Mountain Wind Project and has spent $6 million on the project.

But the BLM notified the companies in March it has deferred work on the project's environment impact statement because of sage grouse. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is re-evaluating the status of the bird and will determine by 2015 if it deserves federal protection.

NV Energy then decided to terminate its part in the project and has notified the state Public Utilities Commission.
