RENO, Nev. -- The Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) reports there were 49 traffic accidents in the greater Reno/Sparks area during Friday's winter weather event.
Trooper Barbara Stapleton tells KOLO 8 News Now the crashes happened between 3:00 Friday afternoon and 4:55am Saturday. No one was killed, but a number of injuries and property damages were reported.
In addition to state roadways, city- and county-maintained roads saw dozens of accidents. In Reno, the Wells Ave. overpass in was closed and re-opened a number of times due to crashes and icy conditions.
At one point, the number of crashes was so high the Reno Police Department recommended drivers involved in non-injury accidents file accident reports independently instead of waiting for an officer to respond.
Trooper Stapleton says even during high-volume times the NHP will always respond to accidents. In some cases, dispatchers can give the parties involved the option to file a report independently if there are no injuries and the parties involved do not want to wait for an officer.
