CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Nevada Highway Patrol has named a new top trooper.

Michael "Sean" Giurlani received badge number one in a ceremony Monday, marking him as the trooper with the highest seniority in the state.

The passing of the badge comes after the retirement of Trooper Lori McGrath, who previously had the longest tenure on the force.

Giurlani began his law enforcement career in Las Vegas in 1988 after graduating from the NHP academy. He later transferred to northern Nevada and has worked in traffic and commercial vehicle enforcements, as well as the background investigations unit.

He's won several awards, including Trooper of the Year in 2007. He was also honored with a commendation medal for his response to the 2011 shooting at a Carson City IHOP restaurant.
