SPARKS, NV - Nevada Highway Patrol troopers are still on the lookout for a man they say ran from a traffic stop Tuesday afternoon.

Troopers say around 4PM, an NHP sergeant stopped Lonnie Schaefer from Kansas, saying he was following another vehicle too closely on Interstate 80 near the Mustang interchange, about four miles east of Sparks.

The sergeant reports while questioning Schaefer, he got suspicious and asked permission to search the car. Upon getting permission, he says he and another trooper found three pounds of marijuana in the car. As Schaefer was about to be placed into custody and arrested, he ran off toward the Truckee River area.

Several other troopers, plus deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, responded to search for the man, but after several hours, they weren't able to locate him. The NHP says Schaefer is 25 years old, white, 5’11” and 190 pounds, with short brown hair and blue eyes. He was wearing a white and blue horizontal striped short-sleeve shirt, blue jeans, and tennis shoes. Troopers don't believe he is a danger to the public.

Schaefer’s car was towed from the scene and taken to the impound yard, and the marijuana was placed into the NHP evidence vault. A request for an arrest warrant for numerous felony charges will be sent to the Washoe County District Attorney’s Office for review. Schaefer is also on parole from a previous robbery conviction in Kansas.
