RENO, Nev. (AP) - A judge has granted a brief delay in the trial for former Nevada lobbyist Harvey Whittemore on charges he broke campaign finance laws, after his lawyers said some long-sought "mystery documents" surfaced that could help prove his innocence.

Lawyers on both sides were scheduled to make their opening statements in federal court in Reno Wednesday morning, but those were postponed until early afternoon.

Whittemore's lead lawyer says he received word Tuesday night that a lawyer who represented the ex-Nevada developer in a related civil case had received a copy of the documents.

Dominic Gentile says they could prove Whittemore was acting within the law when prosecutors say he gave money to others to make nearly $150,000 in contributions that he funneled to Sen. Harry Reid in 2007.
