RENO, Nev. -- People are gathering in the mountain town of Meyers Sunday night for an unusual Christmas celebration.
In an event organized by the Meyers Community Alliance, cyclists will power the lighting of a decorated, 100 foot Jeffrey pine tree. Organizers say this is the first pedal-powered tree lighting in the Tahoe area... and maybe even the whole country.
The stationary bicycles which will help convert pedal-power energy into lit Christmas tree lights will be provided by Elevate Fitness of South Lake Tahoe, the only carbon-neutral gym in the United States, according to the Meyers Community Alliance. Santa Claus will fly in on a Cal Star helicopter for a visit, and firefighters will bring a Christmas fire truck as well.
Rene Brejc of the Meyers Community Alliance says the event highlights the vision many people have "to become a sustainable, healthy community" for both residents and visitors.
