ELKO, Nev. (AP) - State wildlife officials have killed a mountain lion that was reported roaming through some residential neighborhoods in Elko.

Joe Doucette of the Nevada Department of Wildlife says the mature, male mountain lion was considered a threat to public safety because it was walking near young children headed to school on Monday.

NDOW officials found it and shot it near a fence along U.S. Interstate 80 and the boundary of the Indian Colony.

Elko Police Capt. Will Lehmann says it's the first mountain lion he's heard of venturing into town in the 22 years he's lived there.

Faith Lassiter was among those who saw the big cat. She told the Elko Daily Free Press it hopped over an 8-foot tall wooden fence at her home like it was nothing.
