CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Secretary of State Ross Miller says extending Nevada's voter registration deadline to the Friday before elections will allow more people to participate in the process.

Miller testified Thursday in favor of AB440.

Under existing law, registration closes three weeks before the primary or general election.

The changes, if adopted, would allow people to register through Nevada's early voting period and cast a ballot in person. Critics argue it would invite possible fraud.

Miller says in the last election more than 7,000 people registered after the cutoff date and were ineligible to vote because of what he called an "artificial deadline."

The Senate Committee on Legislative Operations and Elections took no action on the bill.
