Tuesday the staff at Double Diamond Elementary School helped organized a surprise reunion between a returning military mom and her 6-year-old son.
“It's hard to describe that feeling of being reunited with your child after so long,” says Staff Sergeant Melissa Meinzer while cradling her son.
1st grader Cody was speechless as he watched her walk through the doors of his school auditorium after a being separated for nearly a year.
Cody has been living with his grandparents here in Reno while his mother was station in Iraq.
“It's very difficult to be separated from Cody,” she says “but at the same time I have a lot of pride in what I do. I’m very proud of all the men and women who serve and the sacrifice however hard it is very much worth it.”
While this was a day of reunions, it's also a day for goodbyes.
Meinzer and her son will leave Reno to return to their home in Virginia after the holidays.
Cody says he’s excited about making friends at his new school.
