CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Some conservationists are questioning Nevada's commitment to its sage grouse plan after Gov. Brian Sandoval asked Department of Wildlife Director Ken Mayer to resign.
The Nevada Conservation League's Kyle Davis on Friday said the move sends a bad message to federal agencies monitoring Nevada's sage grouse efforts.
He says Mayer is known nationally as a top-tier expert on sage grouse. Davis fears losing him could cause the state's effort to prevent the sage grouse's listing to fail.
Davis says many conservationists are disappointed by the move and think the state may be moving away from sound wildlife science.
Mayer tendered his resignation Wednesday at the governor's request. It is effective Feb. 12.
