Man Shot by Deputy Arrested on Weapons Charges

RENO, NV - A man shot by a Washoe County sheriff's deputy is out of the hospital and has been arrested.

27-year-old Michael Nelson Heil is charged with resisting a public official, owning or possessing a gun by a prohibited person, and carrying or concealing a weapon without a permit, as well as hitchhiking.

Reno police say shortly before 4PM November 10, the deputy tried to talk to Heil, allegedly hitchhiking near Gold Ranch. The deputy says Heil had a gun and took off running, then acted as if he were reaching for his weapon, which led the deputy to shoot Heil in the chest, groin and leg. The deputy's name hasn't been released; he is on administrative leave during the investigation.

Reno police are leading the investigation.

When the preliminary investigation is complete, it will be submitted to the District Attorney's Office for an initial determination as to whether the shooting was justified under Nevada law.

If the shooting initially appears justified, the deputy can be returned to duty, pending the completion of the investigation and a final determination as to justification.
