RENO, Nev. (AP) - A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for killing a pedestrian while driving under the influence in Reno.

Washoe County District Judge Jerome Polaha imposed the sentence Thursday on Cesar Manuel Bernal-Cuadra, who will be eligible for parole after 43 months.

In December, a jury convicted him in the October 2011 death of 63-year-old Charles "Doc" Heinemann, a retired carpenter from Sonora, Calif.

Deputy District Attorney Amos Stege says Heinemann and his wife were in Reno fixing the home of his late mother-in-law when he was struck while legally crossing a street in a marked crosswalk.

Stege says tests showed an illegal amount of marijuana in Bernal-Cuadra's system.

Bernal-Cuadra has a prior DUI conviction stemming from a May 2010 arrest. That case also involved marijuana.
