Looking Out for Gangs in Kings Beach

Reno police have still not made any arrests in connection with the murder of a man near the Freight House District over the weekend. They say Macario Ortiz of Carson City was shot to death - as a result of a fight between two rival gangs: one from Carson City, the other from Kings Beach. While a lot of tourists are surprised to learn that there are even gangs in Kings Beach, locals say they've known about them for years.

It's a picturesque vacation spot. Kings Beach is full of shops and restaurants and, of course, tourists. But if you look closely, you will see the writing on the wall. Gangs do exist here.

"They're small time criminals," says one young woman, who grew up in the area. "Some of them, but a lot of times they're just more or less trying to play the part, I think, than real gangs. I mean, there's not much violence going on here in Tahoe. They take it to the city."

That's exactly what Reno police say happened on Sunday - when 28-year-old Macario Ortiz was gunned down in downtown Reno. Three others he was with were also shot. Today, we found a tribute to the Carson City man on Facebook.

The Placer County Sheriff's Department says the last time deputies responded to a gang incident in Kings Beach was months ago. For the most part, there is not a big gang problem here.
