RENO, NV - The new children’s floor at Renown Health is slated to open next week. The technology is state-of-the-art. But the atmosphere is designed to comfort sick children and their families.
“It’s beautiful, it’s the nicest unit in the country,” Pediatric ICU Director Eric Peters, M.D. said. “There isn’t anything nicer than what we have here and it only happened because of community support. This is 100% community-funded and it’s because the people of Reno and the surrounding areas feel like children are important and the care we give them is important.”
The new floor is decorated with more than 150 pieces of art and Wednesday night dozens of artists showed off their work.
“This is the best placement of one of these that I’ve had,” Ventura-based artist John Suttman said of his handmade cabinet displayed near the elevators. “It’s the most appropriate place for this sort of thing and I think hopefully it will be helpful in making people feel better. I’m very happy it’s here.”
Local students submitted their drawings and more than fifty of them were chosen to adorn the walls of the new floor.
“I imagines a girl reading a book and while she’s imagining, it becomes real and all the animals come out,” 8th grader Veeraporn Siridachanon said. “My inspiration was from my art teacher and I’m really glad people can see my artwork, I’m really glad I won.”
Little Flower School 6th-grader Lorenzo Arvisu is the youngest artist featured in the show. His picture is hanging in a special place on the 4th floor.
“My picture is right across from where I was born, like where my mom gave birth to me,” Arvisu said. “I was pretty surprised when I heard that my picture made it, it’s pretty cool.”
Caregivers stress the healing power of art and the opportunities the new facility will provide to area families.
“We already know we have a wonderful pediatric community here and that kids have been receiving top-notch medical care for many years,” Peters said. “But this new floor just signifies our commitment and now the facilities really match the dedication of our staff and their expertise.”
