Local Middle School Helps 'Believe' Campaign

RENO, Nev. -- Is there a Santa Claus? With Christmas around the corner you may start to hear that question a lot, but are you too old to believe he's real? The sixth graders at Billinghurst Middle School have a plan that will make believers out of all of us.

In just two weeks, the multipurpose room at Billinghurst will transform in late 1800s New York City, where a little girl teaches us to believe.

The sixth graders have been sharpening their dance moves and perfecting their pitches for their production of "Yes, Virginia."

Sixth graders are capable of doing stuff because seventh graders are like sixth graders are so cute because they're the youngest in the school.

They were chosen out of 100 schools around the country to put on the musical adaptation of the famous story "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." It's part of Macy's "Believe" campaign. Macy's will donate $1 to Make-A-Wish of America foundation for every letter written to Santa. The money will benefit the local foundation.

"They actually have to do some things at home because we have to put this play together in 6 weeks," Kris Engstrom, the musical director said. "Learning the songs, learning the choreography, they have to practice at home or we won't get it together."

Eleven-year-old Page Nelson loves the environment and to perform with supportive friends. She plays the lead role of Virginia, a little girl who brings magic back into a society that has lost hope.

"She is a very determined little girl," Nelson said. "She wants to know... Is Santa real? And everybody's like yeah Santa's real, but I mean everyone says that."

These eleven-year-olds will show you that even the smallest person can make a difference; all it takes is a little faith.

"[The audience] will be able to say, you know what, Santa is real even though you can's see him," Nelson said.

The play will premier at 7 p.m. on December 20 at Billinighurst Middles School and it is free and open to the public. Ms. Engstrom encourages each person bring a letter to Santa to contribute to the 'Believe' campaign.
