CAMP LEATHERNECK, Helmand province, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan – A Sparks mother won’t be able to spend the holiday season with her Marine son, but he already gave her an early holiday present.
Cpl. Antonio Dominguez is a radio repairman with Regimental Combat Team-7, who is serving in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
The 23 year old Sparks native was given a meritorious promotion to corporal on Dec. 2.
Corporal Dominguez started his education right here in the Truckee Meadows, attending Sparks High School. He got his competitive edge playing basketball and baseball. He was as smart as he was athletic, and graduated on the Honor Society.
He went to school at TMCC while working full time until the greater calling came. He decided to enlist to be a Marine.
His mother, Tina Guie, tells KOLO 8 News Now she knew he was a marine at heart when he was stationed at Twentynine Palms, and she asked him how he felt about that. He told her “I’d rather be somewhere that counts.”
Before his deployment, Dominguez was honored as the “Marine of the Quarter” as part of 7th Marine Regiment. That was in September. Now word of his promotion has made Guie, a single mother, even more proud.
She would like to thanks the coaches and their families for helping shape her son into the Marine he has become, but she deserves a lot of credit too. She says it’s easy to raise such a good son.
While Guie isn’t sure when she’ll see her son again, she knows he’s doing what he was born to do. He could be back in the country next October.
She gets regular emails from Antonio, which she says makes the distance a little easier to bear.
Congratulations to Corporal Antonio Dominguez on his promotion.
