RENO, Nev, -- Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Chief Charles Moore tells KOLO 8 News Now the 'Lightning Plan' has been enacted ahead of thunder and lightning storms rolling toward northern Nevada.
Chief Moore says the plan involves volunteer stations being fully staffed. This move essentially doubles the amount of equipment that can rolled out at a moment's notice. They also alter which and how many units respond to individual calls in order to allow crews to better respond to multiple fires in a short period of time.
Chief Moore encourages anyone who sees a fire to keep three things in mind when calling 911: one, the precise location of the fire is extremely important; two, telling the 911 operator whether or not the fire is threatening buildings is very important; and three, if you can tell how big the fire is that is helpful - you can estimate how many "football fields" worth of land is burning.
