'Leprechaun Chase' Offers Healthy Alternative

RENO, Nev. -- If you can't catch a leprechaun, why not beat him? You can try this Sunday, March 17 at The Leprechaun chase, and it's all for a good cause. Here's how you can help.

While many people will be partying this weekend, Reno178, a local organization is offering a healthy alternative. The Leprechaun chase will raise money for charity and how off up-and--coming Midtown.

"There are a lot of cool things happening in that part of town and a lot of the runners and a lot of people who signed up for this race don't necessarily live in this area don't usually venture in," Ryan Evans, assistant race director said.

About 1500 people will try to chase down Lenny the Leprechaun across the three mile stretch from Stewart St. to Wells Ave., to Holcomb Ave to Liberty St.; those streets will be closed this Sunday for the race.

"[Lenny] will be starting behind so he'll be chasing the field, so everyone will have a head-start on the leprechaun," Evans said.

For every person who Lenny the Leprechaun passes, his pot of gold gets a little bigger, but it will all go to the Discovery Museum.

"We serve kids from birth all the way to 16 or 17 years old to their families. We have seven permanent galleries that range in topics from Nevada's history, to green energy, to different construction methods," Patrick Turner, Discovery Museum marketing manager said.

So why walk and crawl this weekend, when you can run? You don't have to be 21 years old to participate in the race.

"This is a very family-race. They've worked hard to not only involve the hard-core runner. Kids can do 5Ks and strollers can do 5Ks," Turner said.

When you cross the finish line, you get a $3 beer special at Ceol's and a free admission ticket to the Discovery Museum for the day.

If you haven't signed up for the run, it's not too late. You can register during packet pick-up day on Saturday for $30 or $20 as a youth.

The Leprechaun chase will start and finish at the Discovery Museum on St. Patrick's Day this Sunday morning at 8:30.
