CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Nevada lawmakers are paving the way for a new energy environment in the Silver State for decades to come.

The Assembly voted to approve SB123 by a 31-10 margin Monday, just hours before the session's end.

Dubbed NVision, the bill is an overhaul act for NV Energy which is the state's largest energy company.

The plan requires the energy provider to retire coal electricity generation in Nevada and replace that service partly with renewable energy and partly with other forms of energy - likely natural gas.

The company currently has 10 power plants in Nevada and seven of those are natural gas-based.

Republicans objected to the measure as a means for NV Energy to escape regulations meant to protect the ratepayers from shouldering an undue amount changes' costs.
