RENO,NV – Susan G Komen for the Cure announced on Wednesday that they will cancel their 3 day charity races in several major cities.

According to the Associated Press, the announcement comes more than a year after the Dallas-based breast cancer organization experienced intense backlash after its decision to stop giving grants to Planned Parenthood for breast screenings was made public. The funding was restored days later.

But here in northern Nevada, the race will go on as scheduled. The communications director from the northern Nevada chapter said the 15th annual Race for the Cure will be on Sunday, October 6th at the Grand Sierra Resort.

According to a press release, the majority of revenue from the 3-day races funds essential and life-saving research grants, which have been responsible for some of the major scientific breakthroughs in the screening, diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer over the last 30 years. However, at least three quarters of the revenue from local races, such as the Northern Nevada Race for the Cure, provides essential healthcare for the medically underserved in those local communities. For us, that’s 11 counties in Northern Nevada and 4 in Northeastern California. Local people helping local people. It’s more than a cliché when we say we live here, we race here, we save lives here.

Northern Nevada is only beginning to recover from the devastating effects of the economic downturn – record high unemployment rates and home foreclosures - and we have been fortunate that members of our local community have responded to the needs of our friends and neighbors by continuing to support our local affiliate. Almost 4,700 race participants joined us in 2012 which was more than the 2 previous years and almost a record number.
