Kickoff to a Busy Ski Weekend

BOREAL, CA - Traffic on I-80 was backed up for miles Friday morning-and it wasn't going into downtown. Cars were stopped for miles in stretches bordering Lake Tahoe ski areas. The mix of up to four feet of new snow and sunny skies meant most resort parking lots were full by mid morning.

For those who couldn't skip work or school to take advantage of the conditions, Boreal was the answer. The slopes there are open from nine in the morning to nine at night.

"The snow conditions have been absolutely wonderful here," Boreal Night Manager Ron Sylvia said. "With the almost 5 feet of snow we got, it covered everything up and the conditions are now packed powder everywhere."

A lack of snow has been problematic for a lot of area resorts; But for Boreal's night skiing program, the conditions have been ideal.

"We started our night skiing November 5th this year," Sylvia said. "It's one of our earliest seasons because of the cold weather and the snowmaking. We've been getting a little more traffic here at night over the years, more people are getting off of work at 4 and they come over here for a couple of hours and play."

Daphne Harvey of Sacramento waited to drive up until after classes on Friday but wanted to avoid the weekend rush.

"We got all of this fresh snow so what else are you going to do before the crowds hit tomorrow," she said. "Conditions are great, you've got perfect powder on all of the runs, but of course you're going to get stuck. It has its ups and downs!"

It was snowboarder Allen Danco's first day of the season and he planned to make the most of it.

"It's amazing up there, the snow is fresh, it's awesome," Danco said. "We're staying until the place closes."
