Judge Denies Whittemore Motions to Drop Charges

RENO, Nev. (AP) - A federal judge has denied motions by a former Nevada political powerbroker to dismiss charges alleging he used his family and employees to make illegal campaign contributions to U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/Y1STJQ ) U.S. District Judge Larry Hicks on Tuesday denied four motions filed by Harvey Whittemore seeking dismissal of the government's case.

Whittemore was indicted June 6 by a federal grand jury on four counts stemming from campaign contributions made in 2007 to Reid.

Among other things Whittemore argued that evidence presented to the grand jury was insufficient to establish probable cause, but the judge disagreed.

Whittemore is scheduled to face trial in May.
