I-580 Or US 395?

RENO, NV - The new name starts south at the Spaghetti Bowl--at least that's according to Nevada's Department of Transportation.

U-S 395 gets an additional name called I-580.

The roadway is known as a spur in transportation terms, and means it receives federal funds.

“Our I 580 goes from the Reno spaghetti bowl about 40 miles into Carson City. It will eventually end when we complete the Carson Freeway at the Spooner Summit Junction there on Highway 50. It is also 395. So the signs technically 580-slash 395,” says Scott Magruder with the Nevada Department of Transportation.

I 580 signs have been going up all along the 395 corridor.

Magruder says soon 395 markers will be placed along side.

When the new roadway opens to Carson City it will be I 580 and U-S 395.

The old roadway going through Pleasant Valley will be called Alternate 395 or Old Highway 395.

Traveling down the nearly complete highway which includes Galena Creek Bridge you can see all the new signs and markings.

For those of us who live here who needs markings, we know where we're going.

Travelers to our area however could get confused, especially if they use maps--like a brand new one we purchased.

It only lists 395.

Google Maps has yet to alter their program.

“ I think by the time it opens in a week or so you are going to see the Google Maps and all that refer to I580,” says Magruder who adds NDOT has been working with Google.

Magruder says the southbound side of the new highway to Carson City will be open to traffic on August 24th.

He says once the final alterations are complete on the on ramps , the northbound side of the new highway to Carson City will be open to traffic on August 27.
