Carson City, NV - Investigators say hundreds of people were in the stands at Fuji Park as Mariam Morelos performed on Saturday night. It was a horse dancing event at the Francisco Pacheco Rodeo and Concert.

"For some reason, the horse reared, knocked the female off," says Carson City Sheriff Captain Ken Sandage. "She tumbled to the ground and then the horse reared again and fell on top of her."

The horse crushed Morelos. People jumped in to help and control the horse. Morelos was taken to the Costco parking lot across the street where Care-flight picked her up. Morelos died at the hospital.

The director of Carson City Parks and Recreation says this is a tragedy that's rare. But with bull-riding and horse-riding events like this one, there's always a risk.

"As you know, rodeos by their nature are somewhat hazardous and dangerous. And it's hard to determine what causes a horse to spook and causes this type of situation," says Roger Moellendorf, director of Carson City Parks and Recreation. He says his thoughts are with Morelos' family.

The autopsy was being done on Monday to determine the official cause of death. Morelos was from Washoe County.
