We use appliances every day. They clean and dry our clothes, make us coffee, and keep us warm, but there are some hidden dangers.
One local expert says you could be risking your life, just by using every day appliances, because some are actually built to fail. And when they do, your life could be in danger.
Tom Taromina testifies in product liability court cases. He says he's seen firsthand what can happen when products fail.
He's even coined a term, "Acceptable Kill Rate," that's the number of deaths he says appliance companies say they expect when they put out their products, knowing full well that a number of them won't work the way they should.
According to a recent Consumer Reports article, only half of all appliance fires can be blamed on a person. That means the other half of the time, the fires are caused by the appliances themselves.
And the damage they can do is terrifying.
"I see the horror of appliances that have caught on fire, killed young children, electrocuted people," said Taromina.
Taromina says it doesn't matter which brands you buy, or how much you spend, they all carry about the same risk.
There is one thing you can look for when you buy an appliance, check for one that's made here in America, instead of overseas. He says it's significantly safer. The problem is that it's sometimes hard to tell.
