Reno, NV - It was the second annual Northern Nevada Job Fair, hosted by the Grand Sierra Resort and WestStar Credit Union. Twenty-one companies set up booths there, looking to hire.
These were employers that actually have positions available right now. That's why so many people who showed up got interviewed right there. Some, like Maren Smith, even got hired on the spot by the Grand Sierra Resort. She didn't expect that.
"I was inquiring about some positions and they had a position they were looking to hire right away for," says Smith. She had actually been looking for work for three months and was getting used to getting disappointed. She left the job fair with a conditional job offer in housekeeping from the resort.
Mona Joseph of WestStar Credit Union says this wasn't your typical job fair.
"Every single booth here has jobs to offer," says Joseph. "I think that our job seekers are a little tired of going to a job fair and not being able to talk to somebody who represents a job. So this job fair is totally different from any other job fair because every single booth here represents a job."
Joseph says if you add up all of the full-time and part-time positions up for grabs, it totalled about 1,800 jobs. Some of the local employers on hand included Barrick Gold, Affinity Gaming, Amazon.com, ESI Security, the Atlantis, and Kelly Services.
Organizers say more than 3,000 job seekers came out for the Northern Nevada Job Fair last year and they were expecting the same turnout this year. The job fair ended at 3:00 pm.
