RENO, NV.--Gas prices in the Truckee Meadows have gone up 38 cents over the past month.
Reno and Sparks are both above the national average of $3.60 per gallon. The average price of gas in the state of Nevada is $3.54 per gallon. Gas is cheaper in Southern Nevada than it is in Northern Nevada.
Officials say the dramatic spike in prices comes from more expensive crude oil, regional refinery issues and a move toward summer blend gas.
According to fueleconomy.org, there are simple things you can do to your car to make sure you're getting the best gas mileage.
1. Make sure your car is properly tuned, fixing an oxygen censor can improve mileage by up to 40 cents.
2. Make sure your tires are properly inflated, you could improve your gas mileage by 3.3 percent by doing this. The proper tire pressure for your vehicle is usually found on a sticker in the driver's side door jamb or the glove box and in your owner's manual. Do not use the maximum pressure printed on the tire's sidewall.
3. Use the recommended grade of motor oil.
