RENO, Nev. (AP) - Washoe County is approaching record voter registration for next month's election with a very narrow difference between Democrats and Republicans.
County Registrar of Voters Dan Burk said Monday there are 89,443 registered Republicans and 86,835 registered Democrat. That's a difference of only 1 percent, a GOP advantage of 2,608 in the northern Nevada county that includes Reno and Sparks.
With 15 days still to register, total registration for Washoe County is 230,567 - just 833 shy of the record 231,400 registered for the 2008 general election.
Washoe County traditionally has been a Republican stronghold but that's changed some over the past decade. Four years ago, President Obama became the first Democrat to carry the county since Lyndon Johnson in 1964.
