RENO, NV - Since 1986, Raley's has been giving back to the local community through its "Food for Families" program.
"Raley's has donated about 29 million pounds of food over the years," Assistant Store Director Larry Humphrey said. "We are a local community, a local store and we're family owned, and Raley's is a big giver in the Sacramento and Reno areas."
You can donate right at the checkout line. For $10, Raley's will donate $20 worth of food to local food banks. The hope is to donate 2 million pounds of food this year and they're well on their way to reaching that goal.
"We've collected about 1.3 million pounds so far," Humphrey said. "That's what's nice about Reno and Northern Nevada, we all come together when it's needed."
The store is also selling stuffed animals; half the proceeds will go to help fight hunger this holiday season.
Raley's shopper Joan Dunklee says she was happy to donate to the cause.
"It's a way to give hope to those not as fortunate as I am," Dunklee said. "We're not wealthy people but we have something to offer to someone else that doesn't have it. It's perfect, it's Merry Christmas to all"
Donations are being accepted through the end of the year. You can also donate online; details are available on the Kolo 8 News Now Facebook page.
