RENO, Nev. - Local Firefighters showed their support for area children fighting cancer at the Thomas Creek Fire Station Friday night.

“We have four families from the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation that are here today,” Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District Captain Ian Satterfield said. “We raised some money from a blackjack tournament earlier this year and we're here to give them an idea of what we do here in the fire service. We're giving them rides in the fire trucks and we have some gift cards to give to families at the end.”

About 20 firefighters also got their heads shaved as part of a kickoff for the St. Baldrick's Celebration slated for Saturday night. Many of the departments newest members found themselves under the razor.

“I just started so this is a mega-initiation,” firefighter Jamie Rivera said. “But it's for a great cause and it's just hair.”

Firefighter Casey Martin and his son Connor had their heads shaved at the same time.

“We didn't plan this I just wanted him to be a part of it,” Martin said. “I thought it would have more of an effect. We're glad to be a part of it.”

More than 300 people have signed up for the St. Baldrick's event on Saturday and hundreds of people are expected to come cheer them on at the Reno Livestock Events Center.

“It's emotional, it's powerful and it goes to show there's a lot of people who care that the words 'children' and 'cancer' don't belong in the same sentence,” said Leslie Katich of the Northern Nevada Children's Cancer Foundation. “It's really all about the research and all the money we raise goes towards cancer research for children.
