SPARKS, NV - "It's Memorial Day," says James Johnson, a Sparks resident. "Everybody goes out on Memorial Day and instead of staying home, we decided to come out."
That's the idea a lot of other people had at Rock Park. It was so crowded there in the afternoon on Monday, the parking lot was packed.
"I was circling around for about 10 minutes and I made our own parking spot," says Kellyn Williams-Torzilli.
What did she end up doing?
"Well, there's a dirt area over there and I have a truck, so we just rolled in the dirt," laughs Williams-Torzilli.
It wasn't as difficult for the young mother to find a good spot to camp out at with her family. And they brought their appetites.
"We have ribs, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and dip. Pork and beans, all kinds of things," she says.
All that grilling was going on just a short walk from the Truckee River, where kids were cooling off and basking in the sun. Over at Sparks Marina, there was another big crowd.
"Everyone's been a really good mood," says Taylor Hicks, a concession stand worker at Goodies at the Marina. She says the summer-like weather brought in long lines and lots of cash.
"Yeah, it's been a really good day," says Hicks.
But by 7:00pm, Idlewild Park was almost deserted.
"We're wrapping it up; not too many people left now," says Will Mohr, who was having a picnic with his family. "I had a good time. Got to spend it with my family and had some good food."
And some good weather to make this Memorial Day another one worth remembering.
"It's a beautiful day to celebrate and it's Memorial Day and all the vets, we're thanking them for what they've done and it's a nice day," says Kellyn Williams-Torzilli.
