Explore Nevada's Parks with 'Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge'

RENO, Nev. -- Whether you are a casual hiker or experienced in the outdoors, Nevada offers thousands of miles of back-country trails. However, if you aren't familiar with them, it can be hard to know just where to start. Thanks to the Truckee Meadows Parks Foundation, there is a new resource for those looking to explore our region's vast and breath-taking landscape.

"You can drive 10-15 minutes or walk another 10-15 minutes and really be out of the urban environment," Eric Trump, avid hiker said.

Trump loves the great outdoors, everything from Nevada's dry deserts to its lush valleys, he wants to see them all. To reach his goal, he decided to take the Truckee Meadows Trails Challenge (TMTC).

"It gets you off the couch out of the house, and you get to learn about the cultural resources we have here, some of the natural resources here and it's great exercise," he said.

It's a year-long opportunity to explore parks you've never visited before. Anyone can take part and experience isn't necessary.

"By five minutes into it, psychologically, I just feel so much better just being out and just kind of let the problems of the world slip and get away from that for a little bit," Nathan Daniel, TMTC executive director said.

Self-guided, self-paced and self-motivated, the challenge aims to decrease the growing obesity problem in Washoe County, one step at a time.

"Giving people a structure opportunity to get out and explore the parks and get physically fit and go experience nature and enjoy their parks," Daniel said. "It's a win for everybody."

The challenge is based on the honor system. You have 365 days to explore 70 trials, which are categorized form basic to advanced and can range from 1 to 10 miles. It's a great way to explore Northern Nevada through its off beaten paths.

When you complete the challenge, you get a commemorative t-shirt, a certificate and a year-long membership to the Truckee Meadows Park Foundation.

To register individually, the cost is $25. For more information about the TMTC, visit the website below.
