STATELINE, Nev. (AP) - Experts issued a warning to pet owners after a dog was killed by a pack of coyotes near the Tahoe Rim Trail above Lake Tahoe's south shore.

Kristen Kohary says she and her husband, John, were hiking in Stateline last week when their 11-year-old male Whippet suddenly began chasing the animals.

She says she and her husband did not have time to react, and the chase led their dog and five or six coyotes to the top of a ridge near the Tahoe Rim Trail, then down the other side of the ridge.

The Tahoe Daily Tribune reports they found the dog dead and the coyotes eating him by the time they reached the scene.

University of California professor Ben Sacks, a canine expert, says coyotes in the Tahoe area tend to move in numbers and such attacks are not unheard of there.

He says it's possible the coyotes were bulking up for the winter and that they were exerting normal territorial behavior by attacking the dog.

He urges Tahoe pet owners to keep dogs on a leash when possible especially if they enjoy chasing wildlife.
