Digigirlz Inspires Young Girls

RENO, NV - A local event helped motivate and inspire young girls to break gender stereotypes in the field of technology. Microsoft in Reno hosted its 3rd annual "Digigirlz" event to encourage girls to consider careers in science and technology. This year, the event doubled in size.

These girls came here on a Friday not knowing a thing about each other, but they all have one thing in common: a love for technology.

“It's opeing their minds to what's possible. Technology offers fantastic careers and it's our goal to make sure these girls are aware of it and that their minds are open,” Cindy Healy, Director of Digigirlz said.

The girls were able to make movies under a minute and learned about the dangers of internet safety in a growing digital world. Aside from the hands-on activities, the girls got to hear from several motivational speakers who have achieved successful careers in the technolgy industry.

14-year-old Macy June understands the criticisms she will likely face in the future but isn't discouraged.

“ When they get older they start to drop out of science and math. They kinda told us that this will help us dominate with some of the males dominating,” June said.

The free event gives girls ages 12-18 a chance to learn about the different career paths that math, science and technology can offer and talk to women who have succeeded in the field of science, math and technology.

“Fewer and fewer women go into sciences and engineering degrees and we want to makes sure that we're building the products that change the world and in order to do that, we have to have women participate in that as well,” Healy said.

Healy hopes to hopes to increase the number of participants next year by stretching the camp to two to three days for a more in-depth exposure.

To help continue their thrist for technology, the girls were given free smart phones at the end of the event.
