SPARKS, NV - The Truckee Meadows may have just lost another golf course.
The owner of the D'Andrea Country Club in East Sparks says he's closing the course "immediately and permanently."
Owner Will Gustafson says he made the decision following a 762-200 vote by members of the D'Andrea Homeowners Association rejecting his proposal for a $28 dollar a month per household fee to maintain the course.
“It’s very unfortunate that the residents did not see the importance of investing to maintain their beautiful community and way of life,” said Gustafson.
D'Andrea has been losing money. It apparently already owes nearly $150,000 in water bills and was facing a rate hike from the city of Sparks.
The vote was not unexpected. The issue has divided the neighborhood surrounding the golf course with the opposition holding an obvious majority.
Those favoring the fee worry a closed course will soon become a weed choked eyesore, quickly deteriorating past the point where it can be revived.
As an example they pointed to Northgate Golf Course, which was abandoned by the Reno Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority.
Those opposed said the fee was an unfair burden to homeowners who've never had any responsibility for the course, which has always been a separate entity.
Both sides agreed the country club had been mismanaged. Neither had any apparent sympathy for Gustafson.
Some homeowners say however, they will meet this weekend to try to design a "plan B" alternative proposal which they say would include new ownership and would address the concerns of both sides.
