RENO, NV - The Reno Police Department, and other surrounding agencies are working a rash of thefts involving stolen Jeep doors. There has been eight reported thefts during the month of January.
The Reno Police Department has taken four reported thefts in southeast Reno, to include the area of Mira Loma, and the area of Double Diamond. The crimes have been occurring overnight, and the suspect(s) are targeting Jeeps with metal or soft doors.
This type of theft has been occurring across the United States, and is occurring as far away as New York City. These cities noticed that the suspects were targeting Jeep Wranglers from the year 1997 to 2005. This is a crime of opportunity, and this news release is intended to educate the public, and possibly avoid future occurrences. The doors are being targeted as they are a high priced item, and they are selling for thousands of dollars on certain web sites.
There are locking devices you can buy for under $50.00 that protect Jeep doors from being stolen, and you can remove your doors if you are in a high crime area. You can also ensure your auto insurance covers your doors, and ensure you understand your coverage completely.
There are no known suspects at this time.
The detective division is asking that if you have any information about these thefts, or if you observe suspicious activity, that you contact the Property Crimes Division at 334-2133 or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
