VERDI, NV - The shuttered post office in Verdi looks much like it did after a Christmas day arson. There’s broken glass, bullet holes and boards over the doors. But the USPS that will soon change.
“We’re pleased to announce that repairs to the Verdi Post Office will soon commence,” USPS representative David Rupert said. “Upon completion of the restoration, services at the location will resume. Customers will continue to be served out of the Peavine Station in Northwest Reno until then”
He says there’s a contractor in place but no definite timeline as of yet. Work is expected to begin in the next few weeks and shouldn’t take more than a few months. It’s good news to the residents who depend on that branch to get their mail.
“I’m very happy because I use that branch a lot,” postal customer Beverly Shannon said. “It’s been very inconvenient because the other post office is so crowded, and this one is so wonderful”
“I have to drive ten miles to the other location,” Tom Shannon said. “The Verdi location is only about a mile from where I live and the people there are very courteous and extremely polite.”
In the past few months, the community has pulled together to make sure everyone can get their mail. Howard Zunino who owns the River Belle Market next door to the Verdi Post Office has been collecting outgoing mail and bringing back mail to his store.
“There are a lot of elderly people out here so there are a couple of different scenarios,” Zunino said. “People drop their mail off here and some of us go and pick up mail, I have a couple of other peoples’ postal keys so whether I do it or someone else does it we get it picked up for them.”
He heard the news early Friday and made sure customers knew their post office would soon be back in business.
“Everybody’s really excited,” Zunino said. “This town has really pulled together through all of this and we’ve written a lot of letters and sent a lot of e-mails to the Postal Service. Maybe they heard us.”
