Chief Asks For More Graffiti Removal Funds


Last year alone the city of Reno took 3800 requests to cleanup graffiti left in neighborhoods.

This year its expected that total number should only go higher as tagging has become a real problem in the area.

Reno's Police Chief Steve Pitts told the city council today, more money needs to go towards the problem.

“We had a national mode kin 2007-2008 that RPD created with Washoe County Sheriffs Department and some other private sector businesses. And that continued for three years. And then with RIFS and budget issues and '09-'10 we lost 60% of that asset,” says Chief Pitts.

Graffiti stays around much longer these days, and the more there is the more it encourages others to so the same.

And its not just it bad areas of town.

One man showed pictures to the city council taken on Virginia Street in the California and midtown areas.

One business owner had to pay $2,000 dollars to remove the graffiti on his California Avenue property.

Chief Pitts says two part time positions aren't cuttin' it.

He is requesting the city council approve at least one full time employee and an abatement program that works seven days a week.

While covering up the graffiti is a start, for one southwest Reno resident who testified today, the city needs to look at a picture even bigger than the graffiti on these walls.

“Provide out children with after school activities that will give them a healthy asset,” says Ted Lavatter who wants the city to reinstate funding for park and recreation programs.

The city council made no decisions at Thurssday's meeting on the issue.

It will cost the city money.

But some resident say the graffiti problem is costing us now.
