GARDNERVILLE, NV -- Crews are getting a handle on the Carter Springs Fire burning in Douglas County. So far, it has burned an estimated 3500 acres of grass, sagebrush, and pinon and juniper land.
Fire officials say a perimeter around the fire has been established and the flames are burning trees and brush within that area. Officially, the fire is estimated to be 65% contained and crews hope to have full containment by Tuesday. They are still using helicopters to drop water on the flames, and hand crews are working to improve the perimeter.
395 is open in both directions with no controls. Officials ask that drivers keep their speeds slower than normal while traveling through the area; emergency vehicles could be accessing side roads off the highway.
The cause of the fire hasn't been determined, but investigators say it started on private property.
