CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - The Carson City School District has been selected as one of 16 winners nationwide to receive a Race to the Top education grant.
Nevada U.S. Sen. Harry Reid announced Carson City's award early Tuesday, saying the district is in line to receive about $10 million.
Carson City was chosen by the U.S. Department of Education as a finalist for the competitive grant last month. It was the only school district in Nevada to advance as a finalist from 372 applications nationwide.
The district in Nevada's capital city serves 7,100 students. Officials say its grant proposal includes hiring 10 teacher/trainers and developing a data system to allow parents to monitor student progress.
