RENO, Nev. -- A man may have been high on drugs when he crashed a vehicle along Interstate 80 Saturday morning.
It started just before 8am in Churchill County when an elderly couple stopped to help the driver of a 1985 Toyota pickup truck that had crashed on I-80 near Mile Marker 77. It turns out the pickup had been reported stolen out of Rancho Cordova, California.
The pickup truck driver then overpowered the couple and stole their Lincoln sedan, leaving them on foot on the side of the freeway. They were not injured.
The carjacker was speeding away eastbound on I-80 when Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) troopers spotted the sedan. In Humboldt County near Mile Marker 190, the Lincoln crashed, caught fire, and burned. NHP troopers arrested the driver before the car went up.
NHP Trooper Barbara Stapleton identified the suspect as 32-year-old McKenzie Dupree Singer from Sacramento.
Both NHP and Churchill County Sheriff's Office personnel are investigating different aspects of the incident. NHP is looking into the two crashes and possible charges related to them. Churchill County investigators are looking at the carjacking, the stolen vehicle, and the possible battery of the couple.
