RENO, NV - Drivers for RTC Ride may go on strike, according to union members. KOLO obtained a flyer stating a "Strike Vote" will happen Friday. Leadership for Teamsters Union Local 533 declined to comment. According to a union-member, the vote will not be on whether to immediately strike, but rather to have the option of a strike available if talks break down.
The drivers actually work for MV Transportation. MV Transportation issued a statement, which states the possibility of a strike has not come up in negotiations. The company also said: "the parties are hoping to reach an agreement for the employees to vote on very soon." The statement went on to state: "we are currently working under an interim agreement with a no strike/no lockout provision... service levels are not in danger of interruption at this time."
Ten years ago, Citifare drivers were on strike for two days, and locked out for one day. Drivers were negotiating with a different company at that time.
"Right now we take an average of three or four buses a day to get from South Meadows to run errands so that would really set us back," Lita Klinker of Reno said.
MV Transportation said both sides would return to the bargaining table in early June.
