SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Paroled killer Loren Herzog apparently committed suicide this week just as investigators renewed discussions to search for missing bodies that some believe he had a
hand in killing.
Bounty hunter Leonard Padilla says he agreed to pay Herzog's co-conspirator to disclose the bodies' locations. Padilla says he called Herzog on Monday afternoon to warn him to get a lawyer.
Authorities found Herzog dead inside his Lassen County trailer hours later.
Investigators believe Herzog and Wesley Shermantine killed as many as 19 people. Shermantine is on Death Row for four murders.
Herzog was convicted of three murders. But an appeals court later tossed the convictions, saying his confession was illegally coerced. He instead pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was paroled in 2010.
Authorities say they'll meet Friday to discuss Shermantine's new claims.
