FERNLEY, NV - Several county and city facilities in Fernley were locked down Monday morning during the investigation of three suspicious boxes.
About 8:15 AM, a Lyon County deputy sheriff was informed of the boxes left at the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office Fernley Sub-Station. One box was located near the substation’s fence and the other two boxes were located inside the parking lot area near a trash dumpster. Due to the suspicious nature of these packages, all surrounding county and city facilities were locked down or evacuated.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Bomb Squad responded and helped with determining the contents of the packages. The bomb squad using x-ray equipment was able to determine that the contents in the suspicious boxes were only books that appeared to have been left for the Lyon County Library, which is located to the south of sheriff’s substation.
Deputies say they don't know why anyone went to the trouble to force entry into the Lyon County Sheriff’s substation to leave boxes of books.
There is still an ongoing investigation into the identity of those responsible for entering a secured law enforcement facility parking lot. Anyone having any information is encouraged to contact Secret Witness at (775) 322-4900 or the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office at (775) 577-5023.
