CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - Lawmakers are considering a move that would remove restrictions on the role of school police officers, and make them equivalent with primary police officers.
The Assembly Government Affairs committee is set to hear AB103 Wednesday at 9 a.m.
Current law restricts the duties of school police officers and limits their jurisdiction to school property unless they are in hot pursuit of a criminal, at a school function or issuing traffic citations on the streets adjacent to school property. The bill removes those limitations and makes school police Category 1 peace officers.
The bill also repeals a requirement for school police officers in counties with populations over 100,000 - currently only Washoe County and Clark County - to transfer investigations of category A felonies to a primary law enforcement agency.
