Better Odds: Winning Big or Finding a Job in Reno?

RENO, Nev.-A website ranks Reno as the worst city in the country to find a job. Careerbliss.com says if you’re looking for a job here, “you might have better odds winning big at one of the downtown casinos.”

But local staffing experts say the odds are a little better than that.

“We do have one of the highest unemployment rates in the country but you can find work here,” Adecco Staffing Branch Manager Milt Muniz said. “We have jobs every single day and we fill positions every single day. There is work out there; you just have to want to work.”

Last month bartender Kerry Ross lost her job due to season staffing changes. She found a new job within days.

“Looking for a job is a full time job!” Ross said. “I had to leave the house early in the morning and didn’t get home until late evening. I didn’t go to the gym. It was a lot of work but I was hired within a week.”

Ross took the time to update and polish her resume before she started hitting the pavement-a move that most likely paid off.

“I shot it back and forth with a good friend of mine and we really worked it out,” Ross said. That’s a lot of it too because I have a lot of experience but if it doesn’t look good on paper you’re not going to get in the door.”

Muniz says it’s no harder to find a job these days than in the past.

“I’ve lived in this community just about my entire life and I’ve never had any trouble finding a job,” Muniz said. “Most of the people we put to work here stay consistently busy so as long as you want to work we’ll find something for you. It just depends on what you’re looking for.”

He says there are a lot of jobs available in manufacturing right now and with the upcoming holiday season they’ll be new opportunities in shipping, receiving and distribution.

Rounding out the top 5 worst cities to look for a job according to careerbliss.com are Boulder, Colo, Wichita, Kan, Greensboro, N.C. and Birmingham, Ala.
