RENO, Nev. -- A portion of the Mt. Rose Highway (SR 431) was closed for several hours Saturday due to an avalanche that sent snow across the lanes.
Nevada Highway Patrol Sgt. Janay Sherven says a snowboarder was there when it started just before 1pm.
"Today we had... a snowboarder jump off a rock and down a mountain," Sherven said. "[It] started an avalanche that covered the roadway on State Route 431. Luckily, he wasn't injured. He was covered in snow a bit, but we got him out."
Sherven told KOLO 8 News Now Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) crews then set charges in the snow. Blowing the charges triggered another, intentionally-set avalanche. NDOT crews then cleared snow from the road and re-opened the highway just after 3pm.
