RENO, NV - The Atlantis is the first casino in northern Nevada to embrace organic recycling. The business is significantly reducing the amount of waste it's putting in local landfills. In December kitchen employees began training to sort organic scraps for compost. Now they items like bones, fruits, breads and dairy are sent to a local composting company to create soil.
All recyclables are placed into blue containers for another new program called Single-Stream Recycling. Until now glass, paper, plastic, aluminum and other recyclable items had to be sorted before they were handed over to Waste Management. Now all those items are collected together and sorted later. That means less lost time for the business and greater participation in the program.
Once the organic and recyclable materials are removed a lot less trash is left behind to go to the landfill. That means a reduced environmental impact and potential savings for the business. Encouraged by this success, the Atlantis plans to extend the program beyond its restaurants into the entire resort.
