CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) - A bill sought by the Washoe County School District to raise taxes for school maintenance remains alive in the Nevada Legislature.
The state Assembly late Monday amended AB46 to "enable" Washoe County commissioners to raise the county property and sales tax rates with a two-thirds vote.
The bill seeks to raise the county sales tax rate by one-quarter of 1 percent and property taxes by 5-cents per $100 of assessed valuation.
As initially proposed, approval by the Legislature to raise the taxes would have required a two-thirds vote in the Assembly and Senate.
When passage seemed unlikely, a compromise was reached to authorize county commissioners to impose the levies.
The bill still faces a critical vote in the Assembly before it can advance to the Senate.
