The Reno Fire Department knocked down a fire at an apartment complex near Idlewild Park.

The fire that began around 1:36 p.m. destroyed two units at The Park apartments at 1850 Idlewild Drive near the intersection of Hunter Lake Drive.

Battalion Chief Bob Knoll says the fire is still under investigation. “It is suspected that there may have been a propane leak where the some was cooking on a barbeque,” says Knoll. “Someone in the area heard a pop when the fire started.”

One witness, a retired firefighter and the man that called in the fire, says it looks like it started outside the downstairs unit possibly involving a gas BBQ.

The lady living in the apartment where the fire started is on oxygen. Her family helped get her out and REMSA is treating her at the scene.

The female victim and her son, Marcus Alford, were sent to the hospital by ground ambulance. Both suffered smoke inhalation and the son sustained cuts when he broke a window to rescue his dog.

Seven persons in the top unit, when the fire broke out, escaped without injury.

All 25 residents were ordered to evacuate by Reno fire to investigate the cause of the fire and possible smoke damage to surrounding units. Red Cross was called in to aid the residents.

NV Energy was working to restore utilities to those units, so the other tenants could get back into their homes.

Engine 5 on Mayberry Drive responded to the two alarm blaze. There were three engines, one ladder truck, a rescue unit, safety officer, chaplain and battalion chief on the scene.

A relief fund has been created for any donations to help the victims of this fire. Alford lives with disabled mother and his two kids 11 and 13 and lost their home in this tragic accident.
